About Us

Open Spaces SLC (formerly Fat Senders) started as a blog to share my experiences as a non-binary, fat person in Salt Lake City, Utah. It quickly blossomed into a community organization, we now have two chapters, one in Salt Lake City, UT and one in San Diego, CA. Our goal is to cultivate safe spaces for fat folks to build community and try new things. Some of the ways we are advocating for size inclusivity in outdoor spaces include group meet ups, working with brands to expand size ranges for technical gear and sharing community narratives. Participants in our meet ups are required to read our Code of Conduct before attending to ensure the most inclusive environment possible. We are primarily focused on outdoor activities (rock climbing, skating, skiing, etc.), but we host at social events occasionally.
